MATCH REPORT: PORTSMOUTH 0 CHELSEA 5Posted on: Wed 24 Mar 2010 Chelsea romped to an emphatic win at Fratton Park tonight as Florent Maloudaand Didier Drogba scored a brace each. Wearing the white shirt and playing under difficult conditions, Chelsea dominated throughout as we secured another three points in the title race, withFrank Lampard finishing the scoring in the final minute. It was a game in which three injuries were sustained before the end of the first half, but was an exciting encounter for the travelling Chelsea fans keen to see the Blues back to winning ways. We haven't lost a League game at Fratton Park since Boxing Day 1957, and that run was not about to be broken tonight. There were several changes from the side which travelled to Blackburn. Petr Cech returned between the posts but Branislav Ivanovic's injury meant Paulo Ferreira swapped to right-back while Yury Zhirkov started on the left. Nicolas Anelka made way for Daniel Sturridge up front and Deco started instead of Salomon Kalou. Both were on the bench alongside Patrick van Aanholt (below) and FA Youth Cup finalist Jeffrey Bruma. ![]() In a new shape this season, Deco was asked to play in the centre with Malouda and Sturridge out wide and Mikel and Lampard deeper, although Lamps andDeco were fluid in their position. The last time we travelled to Portsmouth, Drogba scored the only goal in torrential conditions. He started again as John Terry made his 50th appearance for club and country this season, and equalled Ron Harris's captaining record of 324 games. This game wasn't much drier than that previous meeting and it began withRicardo Carvalho narrowly missing a Lampard corner inside the first three minutes. The pressure continued as Drogba sent two chances off target before 10 minutes were up. The best of the opening shots came from Lampard, who sent a 25-yard screamer dipping towards the bottom left. David James deflected for a corner but the intent was there. However Chelsea struggled to find lone striker Drogba as Portsmouth pushed their backline up and as the rain drizzled down, Zhirkov fouled outside the box allowing O'Hara to try his luck from 25 yards out. The freekick was blocked and Chelsea were soon back on the attack, with Zhirkov making up for the freekick with a break down the left and an eventual shot smothered by James. It took until the 31st minute for Chelsea to take the lead when, following confusion in the Pompey back line, Deco was able to head a scuffed clearance into space for Drogba. Closing down from 25 yards out with only James to beat, Drogba must have startled the Portsmouth keeper as he miss-kicked, offering the Ivorian an open net to score his 29th of the season. ![]() Cech was then forced into his first real save of the game, as Portsmouth struck down the right flank and O'Hara launched a dangerous cross into the box. Meanwhile, an injured Carvalho made way for Alex to join the back four. Minutes later, Portsmouth were also forced to make a substitution when Malouda, who'd had a fairly uneventful game so far, was shown yellow for an aerial crunching challenge on Ricardo Rocha. The Portsmouth defender was stretchered off to be replaced by Angelos Basinas just before the break. Portsmouth were forced into another change before the restart, with Quincy Owusu-Abeyie replacing Tommy Smith at half-time, the Pompey midfielder injured by an arm as he chased Sturridge late in the first half. The fresh legs couldn't slow Chelsea's tempo and it was soon 2-0. Keen to prove he's still on form; Malouda sprinted down the left flank after feeding off a Lampard pass. A few feet from the goal, he drilled a left-footed shot into the back of the net. James could only watch. We were only four minutes into the second half and Chelsea were dominating. ![]() Carlo Ancelotti then introduced Joe Cole to the fold, replacing Daniel Sturridgeon the right flank five minutes before the hour mark. The number 10's impact was immediate and James was pushed into making another acrobatic save after Cole broke down the right, hitting a shot with his first touch. Seconds later it was three. When James failed to hold onto a hefty Lampard strike, Malouda pounced on the rebound, drilling into the net from the left only a minute before the hour. It was proving to be an eventful second half for the Frenchman. With such a comfortable lead, it was time for a debut. Van Aanholt came on for Zhirkov at left-back; the 19-year-old not long returned from a loan spell with Newcastle which ended in January. Soon after, Chelsea's fourth arrived. Feeding off a beautiful through ball fromJohn Mikel Obi, Drogba's fantastic first touch gave him space past Hermann Hreidarsson, allowing him to line up the perfect shot to squeeze past James. That was 30 for the season. There were only 15 minutes left. Further chances fell to Lampard, Drogba and Malouda before the game drew to a close. Although Cech had touched the ball, Portsmouth never really tested the keeper as they failed to produce one shot on target. ![]() The last act of the game was a Lampard header into the net. Cole's cross found Drogba at the far post, who nodded to his vice-captain to head between James' legs and end the scoring at five.
